01Your main applicant’s route is the starting point
Partner and child eligibility depends on the main applicant’s visa. Each family member normally needs an individual application. Their permission does not automatically change when the main applicant switches.
02Care-worker restrictions
Care workers, senior care workers and some medium-skilled occupations have specific restrictions and transitional exceptions. Existing employment dates and children’s circumstances matter. Do not assume all healthcare jobs have the same dependant rules.
03Prepare the relationship evidence
Have a clear record of the family relationship, existing permissions, children’s circumstances and any required maintenance funds. The official route guidance determines the evidence and switching conditions.
04Family visa or dependant visa?
Joining a person on temporary work or study permission is different from applying under the family route to join a settled or British family member. Establish the right category before planning fees.
