01A Portuguese residence route
Commonly called D2, this route covers independent professional activity or entrepreneurship for eligible non-EU, non-EEA and non-Swiss nationals. It is a Portuguese national residence visa, separate from the UK Innovator Founder route.
02Build a credible activity plan
Prepare a clear account of the proposed activity, business or professional background, available funding and intended arrangements in Portugal. Independent professionals may need a contract or service proposal. Follow the responsible consulate’s current document checklist.
03Where you apply matters
The competent Portuguese consulate or its authorised application centre handles the visa stage. Check which post has jurisdiction for your country of lawful residence before booking. A UK residence permission does not automatically make every consulate available.
04From visa to residence
A residence visa normally permits two entries over 4 months so the holder can seek the relevant residence permission in Portugal. The subsequent AIMA stage is separate. Appointment availability and individual processing can vary.
