Be specific about specialty, grade, recent experience and working preferences. Check the responsibilities and support arrangements of any proposed role.
Build a clear clinical profile
Set out your specialty, grade, recent posts and relevant clinical experience in a concise CV. Distinguish the roles you have held from areas you are interested in exploring. Avoid relying on a long list of institutions without explaining your responsibilities.
Describe the settings and duties that are relevant to the work you are seeking. Keep clinical examples anonymous, and do not include patient records in a recruitment introduction.
Be ready to discuss registration status
Doctors practising medicine in the UK need an appropriate type of registration and a licence to practise. The GMC explains the distinction in its licence-to-practise guidance. A role may also have specific GP or specialist register requirements that should be confirmed.
The GMC’s official registers provide registration information. Registration is one part of assessing suitability; the proposed clinical responsibilities and other recruitment requirements still need to be considered.
Explain the working pattern you want
Tell the team your availability, location preferences and practical travel limits. Be clear about the rota patterns, out-of-hours commitments and length of assignment you would consider.
If you have existing professional commitments, identify the constraints early. A preference expressed in a conversation is not a booking confirmation, and an introduction to the talent pool does not guarantee work.
Ask precise questions about the brief
Before agreeing to a role, ask about specialty and grade expectations, clinical responsibilities, supervision, local induction and escalation arrangements. Clarify the systems and setting in which you will work, together with any required local authorisation.
- Who is the clinical lead and what support is available during the assignment?
- Which duties and competencies are essential?
- What checks must be complete before the start date?
- How are working hours, breaks and commercial terms confirmed?
- Who should be contacted if the role changes?
Start with a relevant introduction
CMB welcomes doctors to register an interest in future medical opportunities. Select Doctor on the application form and outline your specialty, experience and preferred setting. Use the agreed secure route for any additional evidence requested by the team.
Our public medical page is a talent-pool invitation. It does not advertise a specific hospital contract, promise immigration sponsorship or confirm a current vacancy. Any opportunity will need an individual discussion of the requirement, suitability, availability and terms.
