Considering prison healthcare? Questions to ask first

An interest in prison healthcare is a useful starting point, but it is not a complete picture of suitability. The clinical role and the establishment’s arrangements need to be understood together before an assignment can be agreed.

The useful starting point

Clarify the clinical brief, confirm the establishment’s requirements and wait for explicit booking and access confirmation before travelling.

What are the clinical responsibilities?

Ask about the nursing field or medical specialty required, the responsibilities on the shift and the support available. A secure-setting label does not explain the clinical tasks, the level of autonomy or how to obtain senior advice.

Be accurate about your recent experience and any area in which you would need further training or supervision. Experience in another environment can inform the conversation, but it should not be treated as automatic evidence of competence for this assignment.

Which checks and clearance apply?

Ask the recruiting team and provider which recruitment checks and establishment-specific processes are required. Confirm who is responsible for each stage and how you will be told it is complete.

If you have worked in a prison before, explain that background when requested. Do not assume that previous clearance, access permission or induction transfers to a different establishment or a later assignment. The responsible organisation must confirm what can be accepted.

What must be arranged before arrival?

Get the exact location, arrival time, entrance instructions and a named contact. Ask what identification is needed and which personal items are permitted. Follow the establishment’s current instructions.

Allow for the agreed access process when planning travel, and clarify how that relates to the booked working time. If instructions are missing or contradictory, resolve them with the provider and recruitment team before setting off.

How will induction and support work?

Ask who provides the local induction, how responsibilities are assigned and how concerns should be escalated. The provider should explain the systems and local procedures relevant to your role.

Keep questions about sensitive establishment arrangements within the approved communication route. A public application form is suitable for a professional introduction, not for detailed security information or identifiable patient records.

  • Who is my clinical contact during the assignment?
  • Which duties require local authorisation?
  • How are handover and concerns documented?
  • What happens if access is delayed or a booking changes?

How do I register an interest with CMB?

Use the application form and select the relevant nursing or doctor role and the prison or secure healthcare sector. Give a concise account of your experience, preferences and availability.

The CMB page invites enquiries and expressions of interest. It does not confirm a current prison vacancy, an establishment contract or security approval. Specific opportunities depend on a confirmed requirement, appropriate checks, suitable experience and agreed terms.
